MAGICIANS MONDAY: The Chalice
MAGICIANS MONDAY: The Chalice
Happy Imbolc! Today is Imbolc or St. Brigid’s Day, and is
recognized as the beginning of spring in some pagan religions. The chalice is associated
with Imbolc so it will be the tool we look at today.
The chalice is one of those magical tools that isn’t always
thought of as a magical tool. It is often thought of as being a symbol for
water and the goddess. However, it is used in magical rituals and therefore is
a tool. The chalice or goblet is used to hold water, wine, and any other
beverage that is used in ritual. Traditionally the chalice is silver or silver
colored, but acidic fluids can eat away at the metal so silver-plated metal can
be dangerous. Pewter can also be dangerous since some varieties contain lead,
and copper can become toxic when used with acid drinks. Because of this, many
witches have started to use glass or ceramic cups, glasses, and goblets. While
not traditional, they are a safer option. Most would tell you that whatever the
chalice you choose to use, you should never use it for anything else and you
should always wash it by hand. And then there’s witches like me. I have two
chalices that sit on my shelf collecting dust and gaining a stunning patina,
but when it comes to my actual ritual and spell work, I grab the nearest mug
from my cupboard, fill it with my drink of choice, and toast to the gods. When
I’m done, I throw it in the dishwasher and wash it with all the rest of my
dishes. You do what works for you and I’ll do what works for me. One could even
argue my methods are the more traditional ones since our ancestors probably
wouldn’t have had access to expensive tools.
I hope you enjoyed reading today’s post. Have a great week!
Blessed be!
