MAGICIANS MONDAY: Runes
MAGICIANS MONDAY: Runes
Runes are an ancient alphabet that was first developed in
Germany and then moved west to Scandinavian countries. There are three major
forms of the runic alphabets: The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon, and the Younger
Futhark. Because most rune stones are made up of the Elder Futhark runes, we
will focus on those. Each rune in the elder futhark represents both a sound and
at least one object. Because of this, runes can be challenging to decipher.
Runes, like many ancient alphabets, were considered to be magical
by the people that used them. In rune lore, runes are often associated with
Odin. Some stories say that he ripped out his own eye in order to learn their
full potential. The goddess Freya is also said to have a strong understanding
of the runes.
Today, runes are often used to foretell the future. There
are many methods of using them for this purpose. The rune symbols can also be
used in spells and carved into other magical tools to instill the power those
runes represent. Hand-carved runes are thought to be the most powerful. However,
you use them, runes are a powerful magical tool, and they are worth studying.
If you are concerned about cultural appropriation, you might be interested to
know that recent DNA tests on Norse burials have proven that they were a
racially diverse culture and approximately half the warrior graves belonged to
women. So, the idea of a blonde and blue-eyed race of warrior men is nothing
more than a myth.
If you are interested in the rune set in the picture, you
