WITCHTIP TUESDAY: Consent

WITCHTIP TUESDAY: Consent

Let me start by saying that I have very strong feelings about love spells. There are very few that I feel are acceptable, and that is because most of the love spells out there involve removing someone’s ability to consent to romantic interactions. As a sexual assault survivor, I understand the damage that is done to someone who has their ability to refuse or consent taken away. I feel that love spells that make someone believe that they are in love with someone else are mind control, a violation of that person’s being, and should never be done. They are akin to rape in my eyes. If you want to use a spell that will draw in love from the universe, go for it. You won’t be taking away anyone’s consent by doing so. Want a spell to help you find your true love? Go for it. Your true love is someone you will meet eventually anyway. You will not violate them by asking them to show up sooner. Want to make a spell to learn to love yourself? Go for it. When you love yourself, you will find sharing love with others is so much easier. You and your partner want to spice up your relationship with a spell you cast together? Are you consenting adults? If yes, go for it. But the minute you start talking about casting a spell to make someone obsessed with you, or think they’ve fallen in love with you (which they haven’t), or to break up someone’s relationship so that you can have a chance with them, I will want nothing more to do with you. I don’t have any respect for people who think they don’t need to ask for consent and cast spells that force someone to give it instead.

This time of year, you see love spells everywhere. So many of them talk about getting the attention of that special someone, or making that person fall madly in love with you. First, all you’re doing is making that person think they have feelings for you. They don’t really have feelings for you. Second, spells break, and they will stop feeling that way at some point. Do you really want to deal with that? And last, if someone you didn’t like put a spell on you to make you think you were in love with them, would you be happy about it? Would you be ok with someone doing that to you? I already know the answer is no, so why would think it was ok to do that to someone else? Where’s your empathy? Just because you have the ability to do something, doesn’t mean it’s ok to do it.

I know I’ve probably lost a few followers for taking this stance but guess what! I don’t care. I don’t want anything to do with people who this it’s ok to violate someone, and if you’re casting a love spell to force someone to give their consent then you are violating them.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. Have a great day. Blessed be.
