Magicians Monday: Candle Snuffers

Image
MAGICIANS MONDAY: Candle Snuffers Today is Magicians Monday. On Mondays I try to explain the different types of tools and their magical uses. This is mostly for beginners to the craft, and I usually only cover the basics. Feel free to skip it if you wish. Candle snuffers are not thought of as magical tools, but they can be particularly useful when performing magic. Candle snuffers are designed to extinguish candles without damaging the wick. If the wick is damaged, relighting the candle can be difficult or even impossible. There are many types available for purchase. Some even have hinges so that you can use the snuffer in almost any position. I don’t currently sell candle snuffers in my shop, but there are many other shops that do sell them. If you would like to see the items I do carry in my shop you can do so by following the link below. https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheAvidityWitch Have a great week! Blessed be! #theaviditywitch #witch #witches #witchcraft #pagan #metaphy

MAGICIANS MONDAY: Runes

Image
MAGICIANS MONDAY: Runes Runes are an ancient alphabet that was first developed in Germany and then moved west to Scandinavian countries. There are three major forms of the runic alphabets: The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon, and the Younger Futhark. Because most rune stones are made up of the Elder Futhark runes, we will focus on those. Each rune in the elder futhark represents both a sound and at least one object. Because of this, runes can be challenging to decipher. Runes, like many ancient alphabets, were considered to be magical by the people that used them. In rune lore, runes are often associated with Odin. Some stories say that he ripped out his own eye in order to learn their full potential. The goddess Freya is also said to have a strong understanding of the runes. Today, runes are often used to foretell the future. There are many methods of using them for this purpose. The rune symbols can also be used in spells and carved into other magical tools to instill the powe

MAGICIANS MONDAY: The Book of Shadows

Image
MAGICIANS MONDAY: The Book of Shadows A Book of Shadows or Grimoire is a witch’s book of spells. If you see these books in movies and television shows, they are usually leather-bound monstrosities covered in dust and archaic writing. I have yet to meet a witch that owns one that looks like that. Every witch’s spell book I’ve ever seen, to be honest I’ve only seen a few because witches tend to be secretive about their spell books, has either been a nice journal or a regular notebook. Both work perfectly well and there is no real need to buy an expensive book to keep your spells in. Keep that in mind if you come across a snobby witch who tells you that you have to buy an expensive book to write your spells in. The books in the photos are my grimoires. The black book on the left is one I bought 20 years ago. It has thick blank pages perfect for drawing diagrams and writing out instructions on how to complete spells. It cost me $15 and was fairly expensive for that point in my life.

MAGICIANS MONDAY: The Chalice

Image
MAGICIANS MONDAY: The Chalice Happy Imbolc! Today is Imbolc or St. Brigid’s Day, and is recognized as the beginning of spring in some pagan religions. The chalice is associated with Imbolc so it will be the tool we look at today. The chalice is one of those magical tools that isn’t always thought of as a magical tool. It is often thought of as being a symbol for water and the goddess. However, it is used in magical rituals and therefore is a tool. The chalice or goblet is used to hold water, wine, and any other beverage that is used in ritual. Traditionally the chalice is silver or silver colored, but acidic fluids can eat away at the metal so silver-plated metal can be dangerous. Pewter can also be dangerous since some varieties contain lead, and copper can become toxic when used with acid drinks. Because of this, many witches have started to use glass or ceramic cups, glasses, and goblets. While not traditional, they are a safer option. Most would tell you that whatever the cha

WITCHTIP TUESDAY: Silver Tarnish

Image
WITCHTIP TUESDAY: Silver Tarnish It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and I haven’t felt like posting much lately, but I am trying to get back into it. This isn’t going to be a long post but hopefully some of you will find this to be a helpful tip. If you have any silver that has become tarnished, you can clean it easily by dipping a damp cloth into ashes and rubbing it on your silver. You can use ashes from an offering fire, your fireplace, or even the ashes from your incense. This is a quick, easy, and sometimes less toxic way of cleaning your silver tools and jewelry. It also won’t damage your set stones like a lot of cleaners. I tried to illustrate what this looks like by wiping a small part of my silver chalice clean, but it didn’t really show in the photo even though it worked in person. I used incense ashes in case you’re wondering. Give it a try the next time you have some tarnished silver. I hope you enjoyed that quick tip. Have a great day and blessed be! https://www.

MAGICIAN MONDAY: Offering Bowl

Image
MAGICIAN MONDAY: Offering Bowl Offering bowls are any bowl, plate, or dish that is placed on an alter and contains an offering to the gods. They can be made from metal, stone, bone, shell, or glass. Unlike other magical items, offering bowls can be made of pretty much anything that isn’t plastic. They can contain any form of offering and can be used to pay tribute to any god. I do not own a bowl that I use specifically for offerings. When I do make the sort of offering that requires one, I usually just get a bowl out of my cupboard and use it. Most people who use magic will tell you not to do that, but the gods have never seemed to mind the way I do things. I hope you enjoyed today’s post. Have a great week! Blessed be! *Image shamelessly stolen from somewhere on the internet. https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheAvidityWitch #theaviditywitch #magicianmonday #offeringbowl #witch #witchcraft #magic #pagan #magical #magictool #tool #magicaltool #tools #magictools #magicaltools #met

MAGICIAN MONDAY: Incense

Image
MAGICIAN MONDAY: Incense Happy Solstice! Merry Yule! I’m keeping this short and sweet on account of the holiday. Incense is the herbs, spices, and resins that are burned. It can be made of whole, ground, or fashioned into sticks and cones. Incense has been used in magic spells and religious rituals for all of human history. It can be used to set a mood, cleanse and banish, create an altered state of mind, or as an offering to the gods. Incense is not usually thought of as being a magical tool, but it is. During winter solstice festivals, incense in the scents of cloves, cinnamon, peppermint, frankincense, and myrrh are often used. Have a wonderful holiday season, and don’t forget to burn a little incense while you celebrate! Blessed be! *My 30% sale in still going on in honor of the solstice. Stop by my Etsy shop if you want to pick up a little something for yourself* *FREE GIFT WITH EVERY PURCHASE UNTIL THE END OF 2020* * I can no longer guarantee that items will reach

MAGICIAN MONDAY: Boline

Image
MAGICIAN MONDAY: Boline A boline is the knife that is used for cutting in magic spells and rituals. Some practitioners feel strongly that a boline should have a white handle, but not all believe this. No, my boline does not have a white handle. It is not big, fancy, or expensive. It was cheap and came from the dollar store. It is also sturdier than it looks and has never failed me. I hope you learned something new today. Have a great week! Blessed be! Broken Post: 11/23/2020 MAGICIAN MONDAY: Cauldrons

Image
MAGICIAN MONDAY: Cauldrons While it is not required for magical work, many magical practitioners use cauldrons. There are many uses for cauldrons. If you have one that is fireproof you can burn anything from paper spells to incense in it. You can even cook in it over an open flame with them. If you have a cauldron that is not fireproof, you can use it for holding water or magical tools on your altar, you can mix and make your spells in them, or you can fill them for water and use them for scrying. My favorite use for my small cauldron is burning power incense. It’s made from iron and heavy, so I know it can’t be knocked over easily. I use it for burning ingredients for spells too, but not as often. I hope you enjoyed reading my post today. Have a great week! Blessed be! #theaviditywitch #magianmonday #witchtip #magicaltool #cauldron #witch #pagan #witchcraft #metaphysical #magician #blessedbe

Broken Post: 11/16/2020 MAGICIAN MONDAY: Athame

Image
MAGICIAN MONDAY: Athame An athame is a knife used in magic to direct your energy. You do not use an athame to physically cut anything. Some traditions require an athame to have a double blade and black handle. The most important part in choosing an athame is feeling comfortable holding it. https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheAvidityWitch #theaviditywitch #witchtip #witchtool #magictool #magicaltool #pagan #witch #witchcraft #metaphysical #athame #knife #magicknife

MAGICIANS MONDAY: Wand

Image
MAGICIANS MONDAY: Wand A wand is a lightweight rod used to channel energy and power into spell work. Wands can be made of many materials including metal, wood, and stone. Some magic users use wands that are made of plastic, but it is not recommended, because plastic is an artificial substance and is not thought of as being able to handle a large amount of energy. In older books on magic, those who are new to the craft are encouraged to make their own wands or have someone who knows them personally make the wand for them. Today that rule is not as strict, partially since there are so many wonderful wand makers out there. The wand in the photo was made by a friend of mine. He sells his wands at Mystical Misfits in Nampa, Idaho, United States of America. Just in case anyone is interested in having a wand like it. Sadly, their Etsy shop is no longer in service, but you can find other information about their physical store here: https://www.facebook.com/mystikal.misfits I would al

WITCHTIP TUESDAY: Creating a Safe Workspace

Image
WITCHTIP TUESDAY: Creating a Safe Workspace During a conversation this past weekend with a beginner witch I became aware of how few sites online explain how to create a safe space in which to perform your rituals and cast your spells. There are plenty of sites that tell you how to perform the spell itself, but I have yet to see one that starts with “Cast your circle.” One of the reasons it is important to create a safe space because energy and entities are drawn to spell work. If you do not have a barrier to protect you, you leave yourself open to attack. So today I am giving a crash course on how to do this. Casting a circle is the most common method of protecting yourself during rituals and spell work. To do this, you must first clear the area of negative energy. You can do this by sweeping it away with a broom or besom. Then you point your athame, wand, or casting hand straight out from your body, and move in a clockwise circle. As you do this, picture a protective barrier goi
