Satire Saturday: The Origins of New Year's Day as We Know It

Image
Hello! If you are reading this, I hope you are well! Today is Saturday, January 1, 2022, and the first Satire Saturday of 2022. For those who don’t know, Satire Saturday is the day when I share information to dispel myths about witches and witchcraft and help people to understand the origins of our modern rituals and holidays. It may also turn into a day where a share a good joke if I come across any. Have you ever wondered why we celebrate New Years Day on the first day of January every year? I have and I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to these things, so I looked it up to find out. I decided to share my findings here for anyone else who may be curious about the holiday’s origin. I may not have all the facts right, but I have done the best I could with the information that is available to me. If any historians stumble across this post and would like to correct anything I get wrong, please feel free to comment on this post. I welcome your input. In ancient times the beginning of

SUNDAY SORCERY: Brigid

Image
SUNDAY SORCERY: Brigid Brigid is a Celtic goddess also known as Brig or Brigit. She is associated with fertility, poetry, healing, spring, and—oddly enough—blacksmithing. She is also associated with the pagan holiday Imbolc which starts on February first. She is an important goddess in modern pagan religions and may be one of the triple goddess entities. During the middle ages, the Celtic goddess Brigid’s characteristics were merged with Saint Brigid, and February first became Saint Brigid’s Day. The image is borrowed from a shop on Etsy called Zeckos. You can purchase the Brigid statue from them here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/925326599/brigid-goddess-of-hearth-home-standing?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=brigid+statue&ref=sr_gallery-1-7&organic_search_click=1&frs=1 I hope you enjoyed this post! MAGICIAN MONDAY: Incense

Image
MAGICIAN MONDAY: Incense Happy Solstice! Merry Yule! I’m keeping this short and sweet on account of the holiday. Incense is the herbs, spices, and resins that are burned. It can be made of whole, ground, or fashioned into sticks and cones. Incense has been used in magic spells and religious rituals for all of human history. It can be used to set a mood, cleanse and banish, create an altered state of mind, or as an offering to the gods. Incense is not usually thought of as being a magical tool, but it is. During winter solstice festivals, incense in the scents of cloves, cinnamon, peppermint, frankincense, and myrrh are often used. Have a wonderful holiday season, and don’t forget to burn a little incense while you celebrate! Blessed be! *My 30% sale in still going on in honor of the solstice. Stop by my Etsy shop if you want to pick up a little something for yourself* *FREE GIFT WITH EVERY PURCHASE UNTIL THE END OF 2020* * I can no longer guarantee that items will reach

WITCHTIP TUESDAY: The Winter Solstice

Image
WITCHTIP TUESDAY: The Winter Solstice Throughout history people have overserved the solstices in some way. I thought that it might be fun to take a look at some of those festivals since the solstice is next week. A lot of modern Christians will get offended by this, but most Christmas traditions have pagan origins. That includes the Christmas tree, the gift giving, the yule log, the caroling, and your Christmas ham. They simple cannot accept that their pagan ancestors didn’t want to give up their celebrations and adapted their new religion to fit those traditions. It’s sad that they deny their heritage, but it is what it is. At any rate, we’re going to look at how far back we have evidence of people recognizing the solstice in this post. Since Christmas has already been mentioned, let’s start with that. Christmas is celebrated on the 25 th day of December by many western Christian religions. They believe it is the day that Jesus Christ was born. Other Christian religions, such a

WITCH TIP TUESDAY: Celebrate Samhain How You See Fit

Image
WITCH TIP TUESDAY: Celebrate Samhain How You See Fit There are a lot of ways to celebrate Samhain. Some witches go all out and celebrate with a massive bonfire and complicated skyclad ritual. Some of find this to be a over the top and chilly, especially if they live in the northern regions, and refer to perform a small ritual after handing out candy. When I was younger, I love performing a big ritual. But now that I am a parent, I prefer the small ritual after handing out candy all night. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate. Follow your heart and do what feels right to you. There will be people who disagree with me one this, but this is the way I have always done things and because of that my family has always had a happy Samhain/Halloween. #theaviditywitch #witchtiptuesday #witchtip #samhain #witch #witchcraft #halloween #metaphysical
